Zalto Cask is a mouth-blown, lead-free crystal glass designed specifically for whisky, cognac and other barrel-aged spirits. It has a capacity of 280 ml, stands 183 mm tall and measures 85 mm across. Why did Zalto develop a new glass?
For years, Zalto's Sweet Wine glass was also recommended for whisky and cognac. During a series of tastings, however, a new prototype showed interesting potential for greater aromatic focus and a more balanced perception of alcohol, fruit and finer notes.
Working with producers and professionals experienced in whisky, cognac, grappa and mezcal, Zalto refined the idea through more than 100 prototypes. Small changes in height, angles and proportions were tasted and compared until Cask emerged as a dedicated solution.
What makes the shape different?
Straight walls to focus aromas
Unlike a traditional rounded brandy snifter, Cask features straighter walls. They are intended to provide a more focused aromatic experience, so that notes of dried fruit, spices, wood and freshness have an opportunity to emerge alongside the spirit's strength.
A long cylindrical opening for balance
The most distinctive feature is the extended opening. It creates a little more distance between the liquid and your nose, which Zalto designed to balance the immediate impression of alcohol with subtler aromas. The glass does not change alcohol strength, but shape can influence how aromas are perceived.
Fine crystal and a short stem
The short stem is comfortable to hold and swirl, while the featherlight, mouth-blown crystal preserves the elegant feel for which the Denk'Art series is known.
